Phone Interview Tips

OUR TOP TIPS FOR PHONE INTERVIEWS

Preparation Advice

You should always prepare yourself for the interview and be ready for the call. The impression you create in the first few minutes of the call may determine if you are offered the job or not.

  • Have a copy of your CV in front of you. We will send you a copy of your formatted First Point Group CV, so you will see exactly what the interviewer is looking at.
  • Review your CV against the job description, and think of what questions the interviewer may ask, for example how long you have worked with any key pieces of equipment. Have answers ready for these questions and highlight when and where you have worked with them.
  • Think of any questions you would like to ask regarding the project / work. Have these questions written down so your interview conversation can flow and have a notepad and pen ready to make notes if you need to.
BE RELAXED

The Telephone Interview

If you have been given a time that you will be called, make sure your phone is on, and you are in a quiet place with good signal so that the interviewer can hear you clearly. If you cannot hear the interviewer correctly, or the line is bad, tell them & possibly ask the interviewer to speak more slowly so you can hear better.

You can't prepare for every possible question they will ask you, relate your answers to your experience and give details & exam-ples of previous similar work for example:

'Do you have experience in ....?'

Answer: ‘Yes I have worked on (that particular equipment) .... In (name the projects you worked with that particular equip-ment)......... doing......' give them examples of how you do the par-ticular tasks (installation, commissioning, O&M, trouble shooting, optimization etc), with the tools you have used. Always be hon-est, and answer clearly.

DO NOT JUST SAY YES OR NO, EXPAND AND GIVE EXAMPLES.

You might have been in charge of a team? If so explain to them what was your daily work and what you have done and achieved with your team.

REMEMBER TO DO THE FOLLOW

Sell yourself...

Remember, the most important things that all employers are looking for is: relevant experience, energy & enthusiasm and adding value to their team. You will be representing their company – so sell yourself & your skills to the interviewer and you will have the best chance of success.

Ask Questions...

A couple of good questions to ask the interviewer are:

  • What problems are you having in the project now?
  • What areas do you need my help?

Provide them some solutions to these questions and explain how you would help them on the project and what difference you would make. If you are available immediately or at short notice, tell them this.
